Sights - Overview

Whether you're a history and archaeology enthusiast or seeking the authentic Greek hospitality and picturesque landscapes, Samos has something for you.

Sight - Pythagoras’ Cave

Pythagoras’ Cave

In the southwest side of Mount Kerkis, within the wild gorge of Kiourka at an altitude of 350 meters, lies the cave of Sarantaskaliotissa, also known as the cave of Pythagoras. At the entrance of the cave, there is a temple dedicated to Panagia Faneromeni (Virgin Mary recealed) and inside the cave, there is a water tank filled with stalactites, which creates a beautiful image.

The name 'Sarantaskaliotissa' derives from the forty steps (saranta means forty, skalia means steps) carved into the rock at the cave entrance, while the name 'cave of Pythagoras' comes from the Samian philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras (580-495 BC), who, according to tradition, used the cave as a study, a place for retreat and also a refuge from his enemies.

Sight - Pythagorion

Pythagorion

One of the most historical places on the island is Pythagorion, built upon the ruins of ancient Samos, which has been declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site. This location is a true cultural gem worth visiting for its ancient theater, the Tunnel of Eupalinos and the Museum, housing rare and impressive artifacts, as well as the picturesque harbor that always offers a lively vibe.

Heraion

Heraion is the temple dedicated to goddess Hera, constituting one of the most important archaeological sites of Samos. Although now only the ruins of the temple remain, it still exudes the magnitude of ancient Greek architecture, while also offering a unique glimpse into the religious life of the era, as well as an impressive view of the surrounding area.

Sight - Natural History Museum

Natural History Museum

The Museum of Natural History, along with the Paleontological Museum, has been located in Mytilinioi of Samos since 1967. Its mission is to house and preserve the paleontological findings of the region, as well as to research and showcase the remarkable natural wealth of Samos and the Aegean. If you are interested in Natural History, the museum features fossils belonging to animals that lived on the island 8-10 million years ago. You can also admire the statue of the ancient Samian mathematician Aristarchus (310-230 BCE), the first of the ancient Samian scholars to delve into Natural History and the Environment, developing the theory of the heliocentric system.
